Presentation: Product Manager, Product Owner and Business Analyst – what is the difference?

With the recent release of the Guide to Product Ownership from the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA), it is an opportune time to revisit the roles Product Manager, Product Owner and Business Analyst in Agile.

Product Manager, Product Owner and Business Analyst. We hear these titles all the time, but do we really understand their roles in the product development lifecycle?

The Product Manager creates the roadmap and has the product vision over the entire life of the product. The Product Owner works with agile teams to translate the strategic vision into Minimum Viable Products (MVP) and coordinate the feature prioritization. Business Analysts deliver the Customer Journeys, Features, Epics and User Stories.

BAs might assist the Product Manager with developing end to end Customer Journeys or the strategic vision of the product over its lifetime. Or maybe, work with the Product Owners to groom the backlog. Importantly a BA is the life blood of forwards & backwards traceability, making sure the testers and developer are only working on the “stuff” that is needed so maximum velocity is achieved.

These three roles are pivotable to the success of Agile not matter the methodology that is used such as SAFe or Scrum.
