Keynote: From Requirements to Results: How Business Analysts Enable Benefits Realisation

Organisations routinely deliver change initiatives (moderately) successfully, yet too often the anticipated business value fails to materialise. This presentation addresses that persistent challenge through the lens of Benefits Management and Realisation (BMR), positioning Business Analysts (BAs) as critical enablers of value across the investment lifecycle.

Designed specifically for a business analysis audience, the session introduces BMR in clear, practical terms before moving beyond theory to examine how core BA activities directly support benefits identification, definition, measurement, and achievement. While accountability for benefits properly resides with business stakeholders, it is the quality, rigour, and relevance of BA activities (from early stakeholder engagement and understanding business drivers, to current and target state analysis, requirements elicitation, traceability, gap analysis, and fitness‑for‑purpose criteria) which fundamentally shape whether benefits are realistic, measurable, and achievable.

The presentation places particular emphasis on the benefit dependency network (benefits map) as a key linking mechanism between strategic objectives, benefits, business changes, and enabling capabilities. Common weaknesses in benefits thinking are explored, along with how BA analytical skills can strengthen benefit logic, challenge flawed assumptions, and reduce benefits “leakage” during transition and adoption.

Looking ahead, the session considers how outcome‑focused thinking and evolving delivery models are expanding the BA role from requirements specialist to value partner. Attendees will gain practical insights into how they already contribute to benefits realisation (often unintentionally) and how they can more deliberately support value creation in their organisations
