Presentation: Triple B…Breaking the Back of Backlogs
Kalindi’s presentation emphasises the importance of lean backlogs and will uncover strategies to organise backlogs and to effectively even reduce the backlogs.
Strategies to organise the backlogs:
- User story mapping by Jeff Patton – used generally when you are initially building a backlog based on user activities and tasks.
- Idea funnel backlog – backlog is a funnel from wide opening to narrowing down as the idea moves forward to development and delivery. Can be enhanced by layering prioritisation techniques like Now, Next, Soon and Later or use MOSCOW
- Opportunity backlog by Marty Cagan – prioritized set of opportunities for the product discovery team to explore in product discovery.
- Classes of work backlog – categorizes backlog items into distinct types of work to help teams manage priorities effectively.
- Impact Mapping: graphic planning technique driven by business goals. It has similar principles to story mapping, however the impact map is structured around business objectives and intended people behavior.
- Circle Backlog: visual backlog management technique by organsing items in circles as now, next, later.
Strategies to reduce backlog:
- Spring clean the backlog
- Lean Business Case Filter
- Leverage Roadmaps
- Boomerang Technique
Don’t let your backlogs become a wild, overgrown garden with weeds around and branches tangled. It becomes overwhelming. Make it a Zen Garden—thoughtfully pruned, with only the essential plants flourishing. Every element has a purpose, every stone is placed with intent, and the space invites clarity and focus.
