Drawing from seven years of hands-on experience in the rail industry, this presentation explores the unique challenges and opportunities facing Business Analysts in complex industrial environments. The rail sector, with its critical infrastructure, strict safety requirements, and diverse stakeholder landscape, demands that BAs develop specialized technical knowledge and adapt traditional analysis techniques.
The presentation examines essential technical competencies required in rail – from basic electrical systems to network infrastructure (depending on the type of project) – and demonstrates how BAs can effectively support operations teams while maintaining project momentum. Through real-world examples, we’ll explore how BAs navigate the complexities of industrial settings, facilitate communication across technical disciplines, and drive project success.
Building on these insights, we’ll conclude by proposing the emergence of a new specialised role: the Industrial Business Analyst. This evolution in the BA profession recognises the unique demands of industrial environments and the need for BAs who can seamlessly integrate technical literacy with traditional business analysis skills.
