Scott Helmers
Scott Helmers is a Partner at the Harvard Computing Group, a software and consulting firm that assists clients with understanding and implementing business process and data visualization solutions. He is a co-inventor of TaskMap (www.taskmap.com), a Visio add-in that allows anyone to document, analyze, and improve any business process.
Scott has been named a Microsoft MVP for Visio every year since 2008 and is the primary Visio expert at Experts-Exchange.com. He has helped companies create custom Visio add-ins to boost employee productivity as well as to visualize data, especially in conjunction with Power BI. He’s written four books for Microsoft Press including Visio 2016 Step by Step.
Scott has taught thousands of people to use Visio and other technologies more effectively and is a course author for LinkedIn Learning (https://www.linkedin.com/in/scotthelmers). For 10 years he was an Adjunct Professor at both Northeastern and Boston Universities (USA).
When not at his desk or with his family, Scott can usually be found on his bicycle or working with a community theater company.
Presentation: Your process maps should be more like Google Maps. Here’s Why.
When you use a Google map, you want to see where your destination is in relation to where you are. But you also want to know what you’ll find along the way; what the traffic conditions are like; which way to go in case of an accident.
In contrast, when you look at most process maps, all you get is a picture. Sure, it’s helpful to see the path from start to finish through a process, but you also need to know who the key players are, what risks you’re likely to encounter; which alternate paths you might need; and where to get additional information along the way. Ideally, the process maps you create should become the central repository for all knowledge about a process.
If your organization’s process maps are little more than flowcharts with text on boxes, come to this session to move beyond basic diagrams and see examples of content-rich maps that are loaded with added-value features. The examples for this session were created with Microsoft Visio but many of the ideas can be used with other mapping software.
